접속사는 낱말과 낱말, 구와 구, 절과 절을 연결하는 품사로서 등위 접속사와 종속 접속사의 두 종류가 있다.

 

1. 등위 접속사의 용법


  문법상 대등한 관계를 가지는 낱말, 구, 절을 연결하는 접속사를 등위 접속사라 하며 의
미상 다음과 같이 넷으로 구분한다.

(1) 연결 접속사 and

  ① and
     Ladies and gentleman ! (신사 숙녀 여러분!)
     We bacame man and wife. (=husband and wife) - 관사 없이 쓰임
     (우리들은 부부가 되었다.)
     Students must always study in war and in peace.
     (학생들은 전시나 평화시나 항상 공부해야 한다.)                  ★ peace 평화
     Will you come here and play tennis with us?
     (이리 와서 테니스 같이 하지 않겠니?)

  ② both ~ and : ~하기도 하고 ~하기도 하다.
     This novel is both interesting and instructive.       ★ instructive 교육적인
     I speak both English and French. (나는 영어도 하고 불어도 한다.)

  ③ at once ~ and
     This book is at once interesting and instructive.
     (이 책은 재미도 있고 교훈적이기도 하다.)
  

(2) 선택 접속사 or, either ~ or, neither ~ nor

  ① or
     Is it green or blue?  (그것은 초록색이냐 파란색이냐?)
     Are you coming or not? (당신은 오겠소 안 오겠소?)
     Rain or shine, the farmer worked hard in the field.
     (비가 오든 안오든 그 농부는 들판에서 열심히 일했다.)

  ② or (=if not)
     Study hard, or you will fail. (=Unless you study hard, you will fail.)
     (열심히 공부해라, 그렇지 않으면 실패할 것이다.)

  ③ either ~ or
     You may take either a book or a notebook.
     (책이나 공책 중 어느 것을 가져도 좋다.)
     Either you or I am in the wrong.  (당신 아니면 내가 잘못이다.)
      

  ④ neither ~ nor
     Neither you nor I have anything. (당신이나 나나 아무것도 기지고 있지 않다.)
     Neither he nor she knows about it. (그나 그여자는 그것에 대해 모른다.)
     We neither moved nor made any noise.                      ★ noise 소음
     (우리는 꼼짝하지도 않았으며 아무 소리도 내지 않았다.)
    

(3) 반의(反意) 접속사 but, yet, however

  ① but
     I am poor, but I am happy. (가난하지만 나는 행복하다.)

  ② but
     It never rains but it pours.                       ★ pour (비가) 억수같이 오다
     (비가 오면 반드시 억수같이 퍼붓는다.)
     (=Unwelcome things come in quick succession.)
     (안좋은 일들은 계속해서 일어난다.(불행은 겹치게 마련).)

  ③ yet (=nevertheless)                           ★ nevertheless 그럼에도 불구하고
     He made great efforts, yet he failed to gain his success.
     (그는 많은 노력을 했으나 성공하지 못했다.)            ★ make efforts 노력하다.
     She's vain and foolish, yet people like her.          ★ vain 허영심이 강한
     (그녀가 허영심이 있고 어리석은데도 사람들은 그녀를 좋아한다.)

  ④ however
     It is his, however, you may borrow it.
     (그것은 그의 것이지만 너는 그것을 빌릴 수 있다.)

(4) 추론 접속사 therefore, so, for, then

  ① therefore
     I think, therefore I am. (나는 생각한다. 그러므로 나는 존재한다.)

  ② so
     It is late, so you had better go to bed. (늦었으니 자는게 좋다.)

  ③ for
     I shall die someday : for all men are mortal.     ★ mortal 죽어야 할, 치명적인
     (나는 언젠가는 죽는다. 왜냐하면 모든 사람은 죽기 때문이다.)

  ④ then
     You will finish your homework, then you may go home.
     (숙제를 마치고 나면 집에 가도 좋다.)
