1. 형용사의 용법

(1) 한정적 용법:명사의 앞이나 뒤에 놓여서 명사를 수식하는 용법이다.

    I met very beautiful girl.

    Please give me something cold. (나에게 찬 것을 주시오.)

(2) 서술적 용법:주격보어나 목적격 보어가 되어 명사 또는 대명사를

    간접적으로 수식하는 용법이다.

    The rose is white. (주격보어) - (그 장미는 하얗다.)

    I found the story very interesting. - (목적격 보어)

    (나는 그 이야기가 매우 재미 있음을 알았다.)

(3) 어떤 형용사는 위의 두 용법 중 한 가지로만 쓰이기도 하고, 두 가지로

    다 쓰이나 용법에 따라 뜻이 달라지는 경우도 있다.

  ① 한정적 용법에만 사용되는 형용사

     my elder brother (나의 형)

     the upper class (상류 계급)                             ★ upper 상위의, 상류의

     

  ② 서술적 용법에만 사용되는 형용사

     I found him asleep. (그가 잠자고 있는 것을 발견했다.)

     

  ③ 한정과 서술의 용법에 따라 의미가 달라지는 형용사

     the late Mr.Brown (고 브라운씨)

     He was late for the meeting. (그는 모임에 늦었다.)

     a certain town (어떤 마을)

     He is certain to come. (그는 틀림없이 온다.)

     The present situation (현 상황)

     Many people were present. (많은 사람들이 참석했다.)

 

 

2. 수량 형용사의 용법  　 (1) 부정 수량 형용사: 막연한 수나 양을 표시하는 형용사   ① many와 much 의 용법: many는 수가 많은 것을 나타내므로 부정 관사를 붙일 수 있는     명사 앞에 사용되며, much는 양이 많은 것을 나타내므로 물질 명사, 추상명사 앞에서     사용된다.      many books,    much money   ② few와 little: few는 수를, little은 양을 나타낸다. 부정관사가 붙으면    「약간 있다」 는 긍정의 뜻이고, 없으면「거의 없다」는 부정의 뜻이 된다.      He has a few friends. (그는 친구가 몇 있다.)      He has few friends. (그는 친구가 거의 없다.)      I have a little money. (나는 돈이 좀 있다.)      I have little money. (나는 돈이 거의 없다.) (2) 수사: 수사에는 one, two, three와 같은 기수와 first, second, third ......     와 같은 서수가 있다.   ① 정   수      167 = one hundred (and) sixty-seven      241,328 = two hundred forty-one thousand, three hundred (and) twenty-eight   ② 분수와 소수      = one half (= a half)          = one third (= a third)      = two thirds                  = two and two-fifths     ③ 연호, 월일:연호는 두 자리씩 나누어 읽는다.     May 1st = May (the) first     July 4(th) = July (the) fourth.     ④ 전화 번호:한 자리씩 읽는다.    307-4922 : three (O[ou]) seven - four nine two two ⑤ 왕과 여왕의 호칭:서수로 읽는다.    Henry Ⅷ      Henry the Eighth    Louis ⅩⅣ    Louis the Fourteenth    Catherine Ⅱ  Catherine the Second. ⑥ 계   산    2 + 2 = 4       :Two and two are[is] four.    6 + 5 = 11      :Six and five are[is] eleven.    712 + 145 = 857 :Seven hundred twelve plus one hundred and forty-five is[equals]                     eight hundred and fifty-seven. ★ equal ~와 같다    7 - 4 = 3       :Four from seven leaves [is] three.            ★ leave ~를 남기다    619 - 428 = 191 :Six hundred and nineteen minus four hundred and twenty-eight                     equals a hundred and ninety-one. ★ minus (빼기)    3 X 4 = 12      :Three fours are twelve.    17 X 381 = 6,477:Seventeen times three hundred eighty-one is/makes six thousand,                     four hundred seventy-seven. ★ time 배(倍)    261 9 = 29      :Two hundred sixty-one divided by nine euqals twenty-nine.                                                                    ★ divide 나누다 ************************************* 연습문제 ******************************* A. 다음을 영어로 읽어라.   1. 1979년   2. 6월 6일   3. 7 X 5 = 35
